Glencoe and Glen Etive

Explore the most popular glen in Scotland

Day 1

This itinerary will be slightly shorter, as Glencoe is on the way to many places and so could be a part of a longer trip. For example to Mallaig or the Isle of Skye. I have also camped in Bunree campsite near Glencoe and taken day trips to Fort William and Oban from there.

Starting in Stirling, we're heading north west. A great halfway point on this 2 hour drive to Glencoe is The Green Welly Stop in Tyndrum, or if you can't make it that far in one go there are public toilets and coffee stops along the way in Callander and Crianlarich.

If you are at the Green Welly Stop in the morning, the bacon rolls are to die for.

There are plenty of laybys worth stopping in on the way into Glencoe, for example here and here.

Glen Etive was an accidental find for us, we decided to turn off and see where the road went, only to discover it was the road from the James Bond Skyfall movie! It is a fun single track road (plenty of passing places) to slowly meander down and look at the amazing views. We go to the tiny car park, climb down to the water for pictures, make some lunch, and turn around to go back again.

Once back on the main Glencoe road, it is impressive to stop at the Three Sisters Viewpoint (if you can get a space), or this layby for more stunning views.

The last thing I would mention is Crafts & Things for some souvenirs, just past Glencoe village!
