Neist Point cliffs on Isle of Skye

Isle of Skye road trip

A 5 day adventure to the Isle of Skye with campsite suggestions.

Day 1

Day 2

Day 3

From Stirling, head north west through Callander, Crianlarich then Glencoe. Head north through Fort William, then west from Invergarry. This route is very scenic, you may find yourself stopping to take in the views. Cross the bridge onto Skye and head towards Broadford.

Driving time: 4.25 hours

To eat: Cafe Sia & Siaway

Stay the night: Camping Skye, Broadford

Slowly head towards Portree, taking in the natural beauty of Skye and surrounding islands. Walk around Portree, check out the harbour with it's colourful buildings and do some shopping. A slower paced day to make up for so much driving the day before!

Driving time: 45 mins

To eat: Mackenzie's Bakery

Stay the night: Portree Campsite, Portree

Take the long way around the island, following the coast and eventually ending up in Uig. Lots of things to see today: Loch Fada with views towards Old Man of Storr, walk up the Storr, check out the Rigg Viewpoint, Lealt Fall View Point and Mealt Falls viewpoint. We actuall saw a pod of dolphins at Mealt Falls! You'll also find beaches and the Quiraing. The views from the north of the island towards Harris are amazing.

Driving time: 1 hour

To eat: Uig Lodge

Stay the night: Uig Bay Campsite, Uig

Day 4

Day 5

Today head towards Dunvegan, but not before visiting Uig Pottery to get a souvenir. If you're like me, also head to Edinbane Pottery. Check out Dunvegan Castle, and the variety of view points where you can get stunning pictures. We also found a small coastal walk. Maybe take a detour north to see the Claigan Coral Beach.

Driving time: 1.25 hours

To eat: The Old School Restaurant

Stay the night: Kinloch Campsite, Kilmuir

Start to head home, but we aren't done yet. Take a long single track drive out to Neist Point Lighthouse. I cannot explain enough how useful being in a 4x4 is for this, as many people don't understand passing places or struggle to manouvre their cars. It was very easy to pull off the road onto the verge for oncoming traffic! After this head back to Cafe Cuil for refreshments. Then a visit to Skye wouldn't be complete without seeing, and maybe swimming in, the Fairy Pools. Be prepared for it to be quite busy. Head home feeling satisfied you've seen it all, or stay the night in Broadford again.

Driving time: 1 hour if staying the night or 5 hours to Stirling

To eat: Café Cùil

Stay the night: Camping Skye, Broadford
